“Finder” is a house in Minami Ward, Sapporo, designed to weave light and subtle connections with the neighborhood while maintaining privacy.

Finder is a residence located in a residential neighborhood in Minami Ward, Sapporo, Hokkaido.

While observing the existing streetscape, one question emerged:
how can a house reconnect its inhabitants with the surrounding neighborhood while maintaining privacy?

Many contemporary homes respond to privacy concerns by closing themselves off from the street.
However, doing so can also weaken the subtle relationship between residents and their community.

This project explores a different approach.
By carefully arranging openings and spatial relationships, the house protects privacy while allowing light and the quiet presence of the outside world to enter the interior.

The result is a home that gently reconnects daily living with the surrounding neighborhood, while maintaining a calm and secure environment.

Openings were introduced into the wall along the staircase that links the upper and lower floors.
Through these apertures, one can glimpse the town—and, in turn, allow the town to sense life within.
Rather than fully opening the house, the design creates a gentle connection mediated by light, shadow, and subtle lines of sight.

Yet such openness is not always desirable.
On the west-facing street side, traditional Japanese shoji screens were installed to filter strong afternoon sunlight while softly mediating between interior and exterior.

The intense western sun is diffused into delicate particles of light, quietly filling the rooms.
During the day, crystalline light envelops the interior;
at night, the illuminated shoji glows like a lantern, softly lighting the neighborhood.

Neither fully closed nor completely open,
this house redefines the relationship between home and city—
maintaining distance while carefully weaving connection.
