Residential Design in Asahikawa, Hokkaido | A Home Weaving the Landscape into Daily Life

This house is located in the eastern part of Asahikawa, Hokkaido, near the national road leading to Biei and Furano. Before the site, originally a vast pasture, was converted into residential land, the house was designed to preserve the view of the rolling hills and poplar trees. The design emphasizes “retaining the memory of the land” and “flexibly responding to changes in the surrounding environment,” creating a home that connects the garden and landscape, allowing residents to enjoy the continuity of nature.

Preserving the memory of the site did not mean imitating a ranch-style aesthetic.
Instead, we translated the original pastoral landscape — the rolling hills and patchwork-like fields — into the architectural plan.

The site was organized into a grid based on room dimensions close to the client’s requirements.
Within this grid, interior and exterior spaces were carefully inserted, adjusting views and visual connections with precision.

The subdivided gardens gained distinct purposes — vegetable gardens, guest gardens — each forming a layered external landscape.

This grid appears externally as a structural frame.
It blurs the boundary between inside and outside while also serving as a future-ready device: should surrounding development obstruct views, louvers or screens can be inserted within the frame.

The gardens, framed and viewed from multiple directions, create a spatial composition that resonates with the rhythms of nature.
