“Les Noir” is a house on a sloped site along a river in Sapporo, Hokkaido, designed with skip floors and borrowed scenery to connect the living space with the surrounding landscape.

Les Noir is a residence located on a sloped site along a river in Nishi Ward, Sapporo, Hokkaido.

The design takes advantage of the difference in site levels by placing building volumes at different heights and connecting them through a central stair space.
This skip-floor configuration creates spatial variation while responding naturally to the terrain.

Nanakamado trees surrounding the site are incorporated as borrowed scenery, bringing the seasonal landscape into the living environment.

A U-shaped circulation route guides the line of sight toward the outside landscape, allowing residents to experience the presence of nature throughout the house.

The project explores how a home can respond to the conditions of a sloped site while bringing light and landscape into everyday living.

A residence built on a sloped site

The site was originally divided into two distinct elevations, and the design takes full advantage of this characteristic. A building is placed at each level, connected by a staircase, creating a three-dimensional living space unique to the sloped terrain.

A staircase connecting the rowan tree and the cityscape
The staircase is designed to bring the surrounding landscape into the interior. By preserving the existing rowan tree, the space allows for moments where one can view both the tree and the distant cityscape while moving through it, creating a thoughtful connection with nature.

Continuity Between Exterior and Interior
The staircase is designed with the same materials as the exterior walls, extending into the interior to emphasize continuity with the outside space. This approach creates a seamless connection between the interior and exterior, allowing for an unconscious link to the city and nature as one moves through the space.

A Rich Living Space Created with a Skip-Floor Design
The interior space is designed with a skip-floor layout that takes advantage of the site's varying elevations. This design allows the spaces to flow gently together while maintaining independence for each floor. By incorporating the sloped riverside terrain, the existing rowan tree, and distant cityscape into the staircase and skip-floor configuration, the design aims to create a rich environment that blends with nature and offers a space where the changing seasons can be felt, enriching everyday life.
