Lifting the sky and sea into a site overlooked from above.

The site is located on the mid-slope of a hill in Otaru.
Neighboring buildings closely border both sides, and from the south (road side), a nearby apartment building looks down onto the property. It was not an easy site.

Only a small portion on the north side offers a view of the sea.

The plot is also characteristically compact, as is common in Otaru, and two parking spaces were required.
Given these constraints, the living room was placed on the second floor, where better light and views could be secured.

While carefully responding to surrounding sightlines, the interior was composed to open toward the sky and the sea.

The clients are an outdoor-oriented family who enjoy fishing, skiing, and snowboarding.

A generous earthen-floor entrance (doma) was created, allowing space to dry ski wear beneath the stairs and to maintain fishing gear and skis.
Although the entrance itself measures only 1.5 tatami mats, the combination of the doma and a vertical void creates a sense of openness beyond its actual size.

This void becomes the spatial core of the house, allowing family members to sense each other’s presence.
It also functions as a light shaft, gently bringing eastern light down into the first-floor entrance.

The living room is positioned above the carport.
By lowering the living area slightly below the dining floor level, additional ceiling height was secured, creating a spacious atmosphere within a limited volume.

On the south side, a setback exterior space was introduced to secure daylight from the road side.
Louver screens were installed to block views from the apartment building, forming a semi-outdoor space that feels both open and protected.
